چکیده

We study some of the salient features of the arrival statistics and exploration properties of mortal random walkers, that is, walkers that may die as they move, or as they wait to move. Such evanescence or death events have profound consequences for quantities such as the number of distinct sites visited which are relevant for the computation of encountercontrolled rates in chemical kinetics. We exploit the observation that well-known methods developed decades ago for immortal walkers are widely applicable to mortal walkers. The particular cases of exponential and power-law evanescence are considered in detail. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to the target problem with mortal traps and a particular application thereof, namely, the defect diffusion model. Evanescence of defects is postulated as a possible complementary contribution or perhaps even an alternative to anomalous diffusion to explain observed stretched exponential relaxation behavior.

Exploration and trapping of mortal random walkers.

Exploration and trapping properties of random walkers that may evanesce at any time as they walk have seen very little treatment in the literature, and yet a finite lifetime is a frequent occurrence, and its effects on a number of random walk properties may be profound. For instance, whereas the average number of distinct sites visited by an immortal walker grows with time without bound, that o...

Diffusion - limited reactions and mortal random walkers in confined geometries

Motivated by the diffusion-reaction kinetics on interstellar dust grains, we study a first-passage problem of mortal random walkers in a confined two-dimensional geometry. We provide an exact expression for the encounter probability of two walkers, which is evaluated in limiting cases and checked against extensive kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We analyze the continuum limit which is approach...

A closer look at rock physics models and their assisted interpretation in seismic exploration

Subsurface rocks and their fluid content along with their architecture affect reflected seismic waves through variations in their travel time, reflection amplitude, and phase within the field of exploration seismology. The combined effects of these factors make subsurface interpretation by using reflection waves very difficult. Therefore, assistance from other subsurface disciplines is needed i...

Angle and time of arrival statistics for circular and elliptical scattering models

With the introduction of antenna array systems into wireless communication networks comes the need to better understand the spatial characteristics of the channel. Scattering models provide both angle of arrival (AOA) and time of arrival (TOA) statistics of the channel. A number of different scattering models have been proposed in the literature including elliptical and circular models. These m...
